BRF works with a vertical integration system<\/strong>, which consists of a collaboration in which the company provides animals with supplies and technical assistance, and integrated producers provide animal breeding manpower and structure according to the animal welfare standards<\/a> expected.<\/p>\n

The corporate instructions for breeding and slaughtering animals are the same for owned and third-party units, so the guidelines of the global Animal Welfare Program Made in BRF are used as a standard for the company\u2019s entire production force, which may lead to contract termination in case of failure to meet the standards (Animal Welfare standards).<\/p>\n

In 2019, we rolled out the animal welfare compliance framework tool based on the current legislation, national and international animal welfare protocols, such as Welfare Quality, Certified Humane and GlobalGAP.<\/p>\n

All poultry and pork slaughterhouses in Brazil are monthly self-assessed using the Animal Welfare Compliance Framework tool. In addition, second-party audits are carried out by the corporate team and, in some units, third-party audits are carried out by certifiers and global account clients (e.g.: McDonald\u2019s and KFC\/YUM). To remedy the non-conformities, a joint action plan is established to adjust the requirements, and tracking is done by the animal welfare officers of each plant.<\/p>\n

In agriculture, the animal welfare framework is applied to the integration of poultry and turkeys and to in pig breeding chain by the animal welfare officers. On a monthly basis, 5% of integrated producers at units that have up to 100 integrated of them are assessed, 3% of integrated producers at units that 100\u2013500 of them, and 1% of integrated producers at units that have more than 500 of them. The assessments are always applied to different integrated producers so that the maximum number of properties possible are assessed in a year. As in the industry, all non-conformities are addressed and the plan is managed by the animal welfare officers. The findings are presented on a monthly basis to the company\u2019s top management. The compliance framework helps us to act preventively and systemically.<\/p>\n

preventiva e com a\u00e7\u00f5es corretivas quando necess\u00e1rio.<\/p>\n

BRF has specific indicators that evaluate the performance of poultry farms, transportation and slaughtering procedures, including animal welfare indicators in each of the production stages, which are constantly improving.<\/p>\n

CERTIFICA\u00c7\u00d5ES<\/h2>\n

Today, about 55% of the pig slaughtering process is certified by third-party organizations that endorse the work we do in our plants. For chickens, this percentage is 21% of the animals bred, as the certifications for broiler chicken, the breeding stages and transport are also audited. Learn more about these certifications:<\/p>\n

CERTIFIED HUMANE<\/b>
An international certification that considers the quality of life of animals from birth. The requirements are stricter than many world standards and ensure, among other factors, that animals be free to express their natural behavior. In Lucas do Rio Verde (Mato Grosso), 56 poultry farms hold this certification.<\/p>\n

PAACO<\/b>
The PAACO (Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization) seal includes standards related to the humane slaughter of poultry, which follows the premises established by the U.S. organization National Chicken Council (NCC), a world reference in the poultry industry. We also have the PAACO seal in the pig chain, ensuring that animals are respected until the end of their lives. On pig slaughter, the N.A.M.I. (North America Meat Institute) requirements are followed. Renowned Dr. Temple Grandin is one of its contributors.<\/p>\n

Global GAP IFA <\/b>
Global GAP IFA (Integration Farm Assurance): this private organization establishes voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products worldwide. It works as a practical manual of Good Agricultural Practices worldwide. In addition to good practices, the basis of the protocol is animal welfare. Its certification starts from the beginning of the broiler chain (egg-laying parent stock, hatchery, finishing and transport). We currently have 69 certified integrated producers in Marau\/RS and Serafina Corr\u00eaa\/RS.<\/p>\n

Global GAP CFM <\/b>
Global GAP CFM (Compound Feed Manufacturing): CFM defines control points and compliance criteria for quality assurance in the production, supply and purchase of inputs and feed ingredients for compound feed. It covers all stages of production, from purchase, handling and storage to the processing and distribution of compound foods. The feed plant in Marau\/RS is currently certified on this stringent protocol.

Alo Free (Agricultural Labeling Ordinance): certification required to serve the Swiss market, based on three pillars: animal welfare, traceability and food safety. The animals are tracked from birth to slaughter. Marau\/RS and Serafina Corr\u00eaa\/RS are certified on this protocol.<\/p>\n
